1. Accepting these terms
These terms are between you and ELAQ Limited (“we”, “us”), which makes Altar. By using Altar you agree to them. If you do not agree, please delete the app. How Altar handles data is explained in our privacy policy.
Altar is licensed to you under Apple’s Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA). These terms add to the EULA; where they differ, the EULA applies to your licence to use the app.
2. Who can use Altar
Anyone can use Altar. There is no account and no sign-up. If you are under the age at which you can agree to terms where you live, a parent or guardian should agree to them for you, and purchases follow your Apple Account’s family settings.
3. What Altar is
Altar is an app for reading and praying through scripture: a feed of verses, a Bible reader, Prayer Lock, streaks, challenges, a journal, memorisation, wallpapers and widgets. It is a tool for devotion and for building habits. It is not counselling, medical or mental-health treatment, or a substitute for your own church community or professional help.
If you are struggling, please speak to someone you trust, a pastor, a qualified professional or a local support service.
4. Altar+ subscriptions
Altar is free to use. Altar+ is an optional upgrade, available as:
- a yearly subscription, $29.99 a year, with a 3-day free trial for eligible new subscribers;
- a monthly subscription, $6.99 a month;
- a one-time lifetime purchase, $59.99.
Prices are in US dollars; the App Store shows the price and currency for your country, including any taxes.
Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage and cancel subscriptions in your Apple Account settings (Settings › your name › Subscriptions) after purchase. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep Altar+ until the end of the period you have paid for.
If you start the free trial and do not cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, the yearly subscription begins and you are charged. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited when you purchase a subscription.
The lifetime purchase is a one-time payment for continued access to Altar+ features in this app. It is not a subscription and does not renew.
Because Altar has no account, your purchase belongs to your Apple Account. On a new iPhone, use Restore Purchases in Altar’s Settings.
5. Refunds
All purchases are made through Apple, and Apple handles refunds. We cannot issue refunds ourselves. To request one, go to reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
6. Prayer Lock and its limits
Prayer Lock uses Apple’s Screen Time to put a “Pray first” screen over apps you choose. It is designed to help you pause, not to make your phone unusable:
- You choose which apps it covers, and you can switch Prayer Lock off in Altar at any time.
- Once you have used the day’s unlocks, an emergency unlock opens your apps for 5 minutes, at most once an hour.
- You can remove Altar’s Screen Time access in Settings › Screen Time, or delete Altar, which removes its locks.
Prayer Lock depends on iOS. Screen Time can behave differently across iOS versions, after updates, in Low Power Mode or when permissions change, and Apple controls what apps like Altar can do with it. We cannot guarantee that a lock will always appear, or always lift, exactly on time. Do not use Prayer Lock on any app you may need in an emergency, such as phone, messaging, maps, medical, banking or safety apps.
Prayer Lock is a self-control tool for your own device. Do not use it to restrict someone else’s phone without their knowledge.
7. Scripture
Altar includes the King James Version and the World English Bible. The World English Bible is in the public domain. The King James Version is in the public domain everywhere except the United Kingdom, where rights in it are held by the Crown. Topic lists, reading plans, prayer prompts, the app’s design, code, artwork and the Altar name and mark belong to ELAQ Limited and are licensed to you only for use within the app.
8. Your content
Anything you write in Altar, such as journal entries, belongs to you. It stays on your iPhone and is never sent to us, so we do not claim any rights over it and cannot see it. Verse cards and wallpapers you save or share are yours to use.
9. Acceptable use
Please do not copy, modify, reverse-engineer, resell or redistribute the app, except as the law allows; interfere with its purchase verification; or use Altar’s name or mark in a way that suggests we endorse you.
10. Availability
We may update, change or remove features, and future versions may need a newer iOS. We will not remove something you paid for without offering a fair remedy. Because Altar does not depend on a server of ours, the app on your iPhone keeps working offline.
11. Liability
Altar is provided “as is”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of the app, including missed messages, calls or events while an app was locked. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your statutory rights as a consumer.
12. Changes and contact
We may update these terms. We will post the new version here with a new date; continuing to use Altar after an update means you accept the revised terms.
